Powerboat Course Information
If you have made a booking for a powerboat course, please read this carefully:
Location
The sailing club is situated on Harbour Way in Brancaster Staithe. Post code: PE31 8BW Please follow the guidance at the briefing at the commencement of your course in respect of meeting arrangements etc.
Parking
There is limited parking outside the sailing club. If there is space, it is best to park on the grass on the right hand side immediately after you turn in to Harbour Way.
It is not advisable to park on what is known as the hard at any time (the area immediately after the speed bump as you go down the harbour) as this will be covered with water during high tides. Brancaster Staithe Sailing Club cannot be held responsible for the owner of any vehicle that chooses to park on the hard.
Clothing and Equipment
Please ensure you are dressed appropriately to go on the water each day with a change of clothes and a towel.
It is unlikely that you will be going fully in to the water but an element of the course does include launching and recovering the boat. This means getting wet up to your knees!
Please bring waterproof trousers, a waterproof jacket, buoyancy aid and suitable footwear. Wetsuit boots / shoes, old trainers are ideal but flip-flops are not suitable. In colder months, wellies are suitable but please, no waders!
Unfortunately, you won't be able to go on the water without the above clothing. If you have any queries or problems regarding clothing, please let us know.
Please remember to bring sun cream, hats and sunglasses. Similarly, in the spring / autumn months, hats and gloves are essential. Please bear in mind we will be on the water for 4 hours each day!
Food & Drink
Food and drink is not provided. Please ensure you bring your own provisions whilst on the course.
We kindly request that you do not purchase or consume any alcohol from the bar whilst on the course.
Course Overview
The aim of the Powerboat Level 2 Course is to give you the background information and knowledge to be self sufficient in a small powerboat. This includes:
- Launching and recovery of craft
- Close quarter handling picking up a mooring, coming alongside, turning in a confined space and man overboard
- Driving at planing speed
- Basic navigation
- Collision regulations
- Theory of weather and tide
We will be on the water for 4 hours each day, the remainder of the time completing theory. This is mandatory in order to obtain a Powerboat Level 2 Certificate however theory sessions will be conducted predominantly by way of discussion with the opportunity for participants to interact and become involved.
Certificates & Logbooks
Certificates and logbooks are included in the full course fee unless you have undertaken a powerboat course with BSSC before.
Please note that powerboat certificates are only awarded if sufficient understanding and demonstration of all the course syllabus is shown throughout the course.
Successful completion of the Powerboat Level 2 Course enables participants to apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC), details of which will be given on the course.
Passport Photographs
Please ensure you bring a passport sized photograph in order for your certificate to be issued upon successful completion of the course. If you do not bring a photograph there will be a delay in issuing your certificate.
Pre Course Reading
The course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the RYA Powerboat Level 2 syllabus. It is not a requirement for you to complete any pre-course reading although some people do prefer to do so.
