Training

Dear Members,

This year will be taking applications online for all participants, volunteers and instructors between 1st - 10th March 2024 during which time the application forms (tickets) will be available HERE. We have migrated over to the BSSC Members Hub and so you will need to login. Please DO apply to volunteer as we use your offers of help as part of our selection criteria.

Each child may only enrol in ONE course. Please be aware that if your application is made after this period then you will be placed on a reserve list (this applies to instructors, too).

Key dates:

Assistant Instructor course: Friday 19th July, 12pm - Sunday 21st July, 12pm

Briefings and boat checks: Sunday 21st July, from 2pm

Sailing Days: Monday 22nd July - Saturday 27th July

BBQ at BSSC: Wednesday 24th July, 6.30pm

Courses: Please be aware that we expect children to do the courses in the following order: Stage 1, 2, 3, Start Racing, Improve Your Racing, Stage 4, Sailing with Spinnakers (optional), Seamanship Skills, Assistant Instructor. Following feedback from last year we have decided to run a 4 day course for Stage 3 as we believe it will benefit the participants to have this extra day of training before they look towards racing in a topper.

Prices: Prices are per child.

Stage 1: £155; Stage 2: £245; Stage 3: now a 4-day course (Monday-Thursday) £260; Start Racing: Monday Wednesday £245; Improve Your Racing: Thursday-Saturday £245; Stage 4: £245, Sailing with Spinnakers: Friday-Saturday £155 (subject to demand, instructor and boat availability); Seamanship Skills: £245; Assistant Instructor: £245

We offer subsidized prices for those that live locally, educate their children in a local state school and request that they need the subsidy. Please contact the_clubhouse@bssc.net for a BSSC login BEFORE 1st March.

The trainee Assistant Instructor course will be 20 hours training, over 3 days: The course begins on Friday 19th July - 12pm, finishing on Sunday 21st July - 12pm. All applicants must have completed Stage 4 and Seamanship Skills and be age 16 by 19th July 2024.

Timetable:

We will try and run the same timetable as we did last year with some courses being divided into A and B making smaller teaching groups. For those wishing to race, Start Racing will be Monday - Wednesday, Improve Your Racing will be Thursday - Saturday.

Instructors:

If you would like to be involved in Sail Training 2024 please apply to be an instructor. You will need to email the_clubhouse@bssc.net for a login to BSSC if you don't have one already. You will need to have your RYA reference number (if applicable) and dates of any RYA instructor qualifications, including first aid. Any questions can be directed towards our Chief Instructor, Nick Williams: nickwilliams.uk91@gmail.com or 07704 422548.

Volunteers and Boat Loans:

As ever, we rely on both those generous enough to volunteer their time and loan their boats (wayfarers, fevas and RS 2000s/L2Ks, toppers) to BSSC / Sail Training week. All families of applicants are expected to offer some time, which we capture in the volunteer application form, otherwise please get in touch. We will try to confirm volunteer duties in early July if not before.

Safeguarding and GDPR:

In order to comply with best practice for Safeguarding and GDPR, we require all instructors and volunteers download the form in the Documents section below. The form should be completed and then uploaded to the "My Qualifications" area in the Members Hub. We ask for your understanding for the need to ensure the safety of young members and the protection of data for all our members.

Notes:

Participant places are NOT allocated on a first come first served basis. Applications will only be reviewed after the 10th March. Please make sure you have read and understood the following before making an application for your child.

1. There are minimum recommended age limits for all courses. See individual course pages for details.

2. For stage 3 and above, parents and children need to understand that merely completing a course one year and then enrolling on the next RYA stage the following summer with no practice in between is not sufficient. Copies of the child's log book may be requested in order to be accepted on to the higher end courses. Children must provide their own Topper in good working order. We will not allow toppers on the water if they are not fit for purpose (see topper preparation guide under the course information page).

3. We will run Improve Your Racing again (a non RYA course) which is aimed at those that have completed the Start Racing course in a previous year, done some further independent sailing and competed in a BSSC sailing week or equivalent. Children may apply to do either Start Racing OR Improve Your Racing but not both. Recommended age 12 plus.

4. To apply visit: Home : Brancaster Staithe Sailing Club (bssc.net) and follow Book Events / Sail Training. You will then be asked to login with your BSSC login details. Find the ticket you wish to apply for eg Stage 1 and click on the + sign. Complete the application form and make sure to press RESERVE NOW at the bottom.

Responses:

You will receive confirmation of your applications by email. When the selection is complete (by the end of April), you will receive notification and an invoice which needs to be settled within 2 weeks.

All enquiries should be made to Georgie Child bsscsailtraining@yahoo.co.uk and Alex Angles the_clubhouse@bssc.net

Best wishes from Georgie, Rob, Nick, Tim, Fi and Alex
