Volunteering

The Club needs members to volunteer to run events.

Week to week, safe boating needs safety crews. Well organised racing requires Race Officers. Social and other Club events also rely on volunteers to organise and promote.

As a guide, adult members should try to offer their services for at least one volunteer duty per season, and those with boat park spaces should offer two.

From the 1 st March each year members can sign up for volunteer duties that suit their availability through the Duty Roster on the Membership Hub.

On-the-water volunteering

Race Officers

  • RO's have responsibility for setting the course, starting, finishing and recording race results.
  • A basic knowledge of racing rules is helpful.
  • This duty involves getting to the Clubhouse 75 minutes ahead of the published race start time, meeting the rest of the safety team, and running whichever races are slated for that day.
  • A full 'how to' guide is available here.
  • If you have any questions, Jonathan Groome, will help, or will put you in touch with more experienced RO's if you'd like to learn more or come out and see how its done.

Safety Boat helms/crew

  • The Club mainly uses Musketeer, the new Fast Boat 'Spindrift', and Friends Rib as safety boats.
  • Helms of these boats should have powerboat experience and ideally a PB2 qualification.
  • Crews need not have qualifications.
  • The Musketeer helm will assist the Race Officer on the day.
  • Other helms/crews will lay or monitor racing marks and stand by to assist if boats get into difficulty.
  • Arrive at the Club 75 minutes before the published start time.

Training Week and Race Week volunteering

  • These are organised by the relevant committees and can involve safety boat, beach, Hard and Clubhouse supporting duties.
  • Contact Nick Williams (Training) or James Watson (Race week) for more information, or sign up through Duty Roster on the Members Portal.

Off-the-Water volunteers

Committee

  • Members of the General, Sailing and House Committees are elected each year at the AGM.
  • Members interested in joining any of these groups are warmly encouraged to put their name forward with the Commodore or Vice Commodore.

Fleet captains/Fleet organisers/Fleet event organisers

  • All our fleets have their own events and communications through the year and are run by enthusiasts.
  • Help is always welcome.
  • Contact any of the fleet captains listed in the Handbook or on the website.

Clubhouse maintenance

  • The 'Pensioners Painting Party' carries out maintenance jobs around the Club through the winter.
  • Volunteers are always welcome.
  • Contact Bill Andrews or the Clubhouse staff.

Clubhouse events

  • All our social events, including those related to Training and Race week, the Summer Party and Winter Socials rely on members to organise and help out.
  • Contact the Commodore or Vice Commodore for more information and see the social calendar here for dates.
